Dear Neighbors:
You may have noticed that my list of admirable women was short. These days, there are fewer women in the public eye who are fighting for the rights to control our own reproductive systems, making serious, educated forays into politics, and keeping personal matters out of the media. That's not to say that I don't like women. In fact, I love being a woman. I wouldn't want it any other way. However, I'm embarrassed to find that some women use their positions to inspire men to say That's Why Women Shouldn't ___________ . You know what I'm talking about. Let's dive right into the This Is What Our Ancestors Fought For? pool, shall we?
Media Whores are my biggest pet peeve. It's my belief that if one is famous, it should be for one's accomplishments and not the size of one's ass. I don't watch any of the Kardashian shows or spin-offs because I don't see what I have to gain by doing so. The same goes for Paris Hilton, the moronic wonders from "The Hills" (I'll make an exception for Lauren Conrad. I don't know much about her, but she seems to be a hard working young woman), and the teenage mothers who are spending their time filming instead of parenting. It saddens me when my students talk about these WOO's (Waste Of Oxygen) as if they were important and relevant. They're not. They're a way to distract us from using our brains to accomplish our goals. Young girls look at these WOO's and admire them because if they're on television, they must be admirable, right? If the media wants to follow around young women who will have an impact on other young women, they should start by finding women who volunteer, who balance college with a full-time job, or who are returning to school after many years away. Remember the show about Tommy Lee of Motley Crue going to college? It was silly, but that's the sort of thing I would like to see more often. Put one of those silly media whores in a real job or a college classroom and I'll watch. In the meantime, I'll keep reminding my students that these women are examples of What Failure Looks Like. It doesn't matter to me how much money they have or who they're wearing -- they're silly, vacuous, and probably don't know what "vacuous" means.
Ridiculously Asinine Politicians drive me up the wall. Where is Hillary when we need her? Because the upcoming presidential election will focus on the Republican candidates, every manner of Stupid has decided to take a stab at it. The problem with the female candidates (and non-candidates) we've seen so far is that they simply have nothing intelligent to say and nothing positive, hopeful or essential to offer. Sarah Palin has had plenty of press in the last few years. Unfortunately, she has wasted all of it with stupid comments such as:
"But obviously, we've got to stand with our North Korean allies." (since when is NK our ally?)
"[Barack and Michelle Obama] have power in their words. They could refudiate what it is that this group is saying."(there is no such word as refudiate, but she seems to think if she uses it often enough, it might become one.)
"The explicit sex-ed programs," she added, "will not find my support." (says Grandma Palin)
In case you were starting to miss Palin and her bizarre comments that are often sprinkled with "uh", "um" and "it's like", we now have Michelle Bachmann. Not only is she dragging her bigoted religious views into her campaign, but she's giving speeches filled with outright lies, such as the idea that not allowing rotten children to bully homosexuals means that homosexuality is being taught and encouraged in school. It's not the same thing. Bachmann would also like to put an end to the minimum wage -- how would you like to work for twenty-five cents an hour? She insists that there are "hundreds and hundreds" of scientists who believe in creationism, but can't name even one. And women's rights? She would like to give more rights to unborn babies than to the women who must give birth to them and raise them, often without the assistance of the man who provided the sperm. Margaret Sanger did so much work for us, and women like Palin and Bachmann are throwing it all away with their stupidity and refusal to investigate facts. I'm not worried about Bachmann getting elected; every time she opens her mouth she loses a vote. They encourage the public to see women as baby factories, and that worries me. We're not. We're people. We have rights. The unborn do not. And it should stay that way.
My main problem with these two politicians is that neither has made any suggestions on how to work together as Americans, how to educate those who need it most, or how to stop the hatred of any group that doesn't agree with conservative ideology. Ghandi suggested that one should "be the change you want to see in the world." If that's the advice that Palin and Bachmann are following, maybe they should consider a new approach. One that doesn't involve anyone else having rights to my uterus.
Ghetto girls are just plain icky. These are the girls who dress as though they're for sale and the merchandise must be on display all the time. Instead of attempting to better themselves through education and hard work, they seek to find a man to purchase them and install them in a lifestyle that doesn't require more than drinking, tanning, and screwing. Let's not forget the maintenance of the cheap acrylic nails that they refer to as a "French manicure". Here's a clue: it's not a French manicure. It's the cheap American version. The original is classy, far too classy for the Ghetto Girl. And then the relationship ends and they're out on their asses with nothing. Ghetto girls, you should at least pick up some health insurance. When you're diagnosed with skin cancer from the excessive tanning, it will be too late. Pre-existing condition and all. I can see why this lifestyle is appealing -- Hugh Hefner has been bringing whores into his home for decades, and they've done very well for themselves. Like that Kendra thing. Maybe someday people will forget that she's just another nasty prostitute who used to screw an old man for money. Ewww.
My point is this -- women should be leading this country into the future, not dragging it back into its misogynistic past. We're in control of this ladies, so let's take it back. Let's get rid of legislators who want ownership of our bodies. Let's stop looking up to the Kardashians and other half-wits. Get an education and stop depending on men to guide your future. Think about what Margaret Sanger and other women accomplished for us and show some gratitude. In other words, let's be women and stop being little girls.
