2014: The Year Of The Other Guy

Dear Neighbors:

It has been over six years since President Obama was elected to office. His presidency should have been a positive, celebratory turning point for our country. Instead, it has been plagued with innuendo, scandals, and a utter lack of cooperation from those whose job it is to serve the citizens. I, too, was skeptical of President Obama's ability to overcome the challenges facing him, but after the train wreck that was President Bush, I found him to be a refreshing change. Today, I can't really say that his presidency has been a success or a failure because he's been up against far too many self-satisfied, do-nothing elected officials who have blocked him every step of the way.

I commented today to a colleague that our fifth-grade students would do a better job in Washington, D.C. than the pundits who have whined and cried and thrown tantrums like spoiled little children. The students at my school know how to cooperate even when forced to work with an unpleasant classmate. They know that when working together, sometimes they have to compromise and not everyone gets what they want. If they can do this at the ages of ten or eleven, why can't our senators and congress men and women do the same thing?

Our next election will be held on November 4th of this year. 435 seats in Congress will be up for election, as will 36 in the senate. Typically, the seats don't change asses (seats...asses, get it?) very often. As a result -- nothing changes. Nothing.

I propose that all 471 seats change asses this year. All of them. What's the worst that could happen? Maybe the newly-elected officials won't work well together. Maybe they won't have a clue what to do or what decisions to make. Maybe a budget won't be passed, the government will shut down and maybe they'll pass laws we hate. How would that be different than what we're seeing now?

My challenge to you, citizens of United States, is to get out and vote on November 4th. Instead of voting for the oh-so-complacent incumbents, vote for the other candidate. It doesn't matter who it is or what point of view they represent. Vote for the other guy. And by "guy", I mean person. I call everyone "guy" or "dude".

We often say that those of us without money are also without power. Yet, we have the power to decide who we send to represent us and, more importantly, who we're paying to represent our interests. Let's send a message to those who are supposed to be serving us. Let's show them that regardless of whether we have millions of dollars or not a penny to spare, we have the power to decide how our country is run and who will be running it.

If you don't know the name of your representative, you can go to this website, type in your zip code, and get that information:

The Guy Who's Already There

And if you want to know who else will be running in your district, you can go here:

Who's The Other Guy?

Vote for the Other Guy. It just makes good sense.

Politically Yours,

D
